.Lord of the Flies
In William Gouling's novel, Lord of the Flies, teaches how good doesn't always prevail against evil. In the beginning of the story a group of middle school boys were stranded on an island, that you night as well consider paradise. A place without homework or parents was simply wonderful for a while. However the island slowly fell apart and led to the destruction of the boys. The book proves that humans without law are wicked.
Piggy stands for many things in this novel, he symbolizes reason and good through out the story. until the very end. Piggy was wise and spoke with thought, even if the other boys hadn't realized it. Piggy possessed one of the three things on the island that was man-made and from home, his specs. His glasses represented technology from home, science, and power. Piggy's last words were, "Which is better- to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?" "Which is better, rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?" (page 180) Piggy was sensible and mature which the boys proved they weren't. He, like Ralph and the signal fire, represented hope. He was pretty wise for being so innocent.
Ralph was represented as the leader of all the boys on the island. The conch declared his leadership. The conch wasn't simply a shell he found, that Ralph used to call an assembly. It represented belonged to Ralph until it shattered, and ceased to exist. Ralph was always determined to get home. He created a signal fire, in hope of a rescue. The signal fire meant safety and future. Ralph once spoke to Jack after Jack let the signal fire go out. "There was a shop. Out there. You said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out!" Ralph was furious and scolded Jack in front of his hunters. This shows that Ralph was the chief, and Jack was humiliated.
Jack was drunk with power. He was resentful and a bully. He stood for evil in Lord of the Flies. He never listened to reason and picked on Piggy. Jack has wanted to be the leader since day no one but when he wasn't picked as leader, he became envious of Ralph. Jack was the main reason why they couldn't live peacefully on the island. For example, he started many arguments through-out the novel, was irrational and split up the boys into two groups. All in all, Jack was envious and wicked.
In conclusion good doesn't always prevail against evil. All it took was one boy to start acting ruthless to set the chain reaction of bad behavior. They were incapable of living together without rules simply because they are human.
